with Joseph Wieliczko Psy.D.

Transforming your relationship with food is achievable.

Do you eat when stressed out, bored, sad or not hungry?

Do you overeat because of cravings, emotions, impulses or reactivity?

Do you feel overwhelmed & struggle to make dietary changes?

We can work on your eating struggles together.

By cultivating greater awareness of one's thoughts, feelings states and conditioned eating patterns; you can empower yourself and thereby obtain a greater sense of well-being, confidence in managing your eating struggles as well as develop effective ways of coping with stress.

WHAT IS MINDFUL EATING?

Mindful eating is about tuning in to your body's signals, like genuine hunger cues, to make informed choices about what, when, and how much you eat or drink.

It's a way to avoid making decisions solely based on misleading signals, such as the mere sight, smell, or taste of food, or being influenced by your emotions, thoughts, and beliefs. It's important to note that mindful eating is not a restrictive diet; rather, it is a way of cultivating awareness which facilitates greater understanding, tolerance, insight and change without the need to struggle.

Mindful eating means:

To eat with greater awareness.

  • To discriminate physical cues of hunger from false hunger cues.

  • To make healthier food choices.

  • To stop eating when you no longer feel hungry.

  • To be less judgmental about one’s eating struggles.

  • To use all your senses (including your thoughts and emotions) to choose foods which are nourishing to your body.

Hello. I’m Joseph Wieliczko, Psy.D.

After years of conducting psychotherapy, I transitioned to providing psychological assessments including evaluations for preoperative bariatric patients and other types of evaluation services. As I listened and learned from patients talk about their struggles with weight management and their relationship to food, I began to investigate how my passion for meditation and mindfulness could be utilized to help individuals in their relationship to food and eating.

Eventually I created my own 8 session program (Mindful Eating & Stress Management Program) which is a combination of mindful eating techniques and practices, and mindfulness meditation and related practices to manage one’s stress level more effectively.

Together, let's unlock your full potential and embark on a transformative path towards a healthier, happier you.

  • See what my clients are saying...

“I appreciated Dr. Wieliczko’s kind, supportive and nonjudgmental manner. The guidance and exercises were very practical. I also appreciated that he never put anyone on the spot. I have a very demanding job and sometimes it was all I could do to just show up. Knowing that would be OK made it easy to join each time. Thank you so much for an excellent class, Dr. Wieliczko. I'm so glad I joined, and I feel equipped to keep using and experimenting with these techniques over time. Thanks, too for creating a kind and safe space for everyone. It was a lovely moment in time for all of us in the strange era, and unexpectedly intimate in a very human way.”

“Thank you for your beautifully kind gesture in "gifting" your program, time and wisdom. I am forever grateful for your sharing.  Your program has been life changing in many ways.  You can be sure the ripples will spread outward. Much love & light to you.Thank you”

  • See what my clients are saying...

“This was a wonderful program. I became much more aware of myself and my relationship with myself and food. Very informative. Thank you so much I gained a lot of valuable insight these past weeks.”

  • See what my clients are saying...

“This program changed my overall mindfulness in every aspect of my life. Small habits like making my bed in the morning that increase my relaxation and lower my stress. I'm very grateful for the gift that this program is, and will continue to be.”

  • See what my clients are saying...

“This program has made me look at eating in a whole different manner.  Your reference materials upon "graduation" are very helpful.  I found two of the books (you recommended) at the library and a useful website using the principles and sharing info from other practitioners on mindful eating and meditation, including meditating while walking. Following the guidelines of mindful eating has helped me to make good food choices. I enjoy food more yet eat less because of the habits I have learned to eat slowly and take notice of my hunger. This has helped me to eat less and consequently lose weight without dieting. The lessons are powerful and I highly recommend this program.”

  • See what my clients are saying...

“I appreciated the quotes that were scattered throughout the handouts and pertinent to the topic, they really made me connect to it. I liked the homework review at the start of the week and starting each session with meditation helped too. And I greatly appreciated the review of the classes I missed, which you privately reviewed with me at the end. Great program Dr. W. I got a lot out of it both personally and professionally. Thank you!!!

Why is mindful eating and stress management important?

For many of us, eating has become a source of great difficulty which adversely affects our physical health, emotional well-being, self-esteem, relationships, anxiety leveland makes us depressed as we repeatedly feel disappointed after failed attempts at dieting or weight loss programs.

Mindful eating techniques can help us to settle down, become centered and learn new ways to resolve our food and eating related difficulties without the need to feel deprived.

Mindful eating is about learning how to cultivate greater awareness of the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors which reinforce our eating problems. At the same time, mindful eating can make the eating experience more enjoyable and health promoting.

Mindful eating practices are a way of looking at an aspect of the eating experience which is usually overlooked completely: namely our relationship to food. It is our relationship to food which contributes to the automatic reactivity cycle which perpetuates excessive eating, late night eating, unhealthy eating patterns, guilty feelings, regrets, disappointment and the sense that we can never overcome our struggle with food.  As we become more aware of our unique relationship to food we can start to make more appropriate decisions.

Mindfulness practices can help to reduce ones’ stress, physical pain, anxiety and depressive thoughts, ruminating thoughts, as well as promote greater problem solving ability, self-compassion, creativity, immune system functioning, sleep, self-confidence, learning and well-being.
